How to Avoid Romance Scams

By Dee, 29 April, 2025.

Finding love is one of life's greatest joys. But sadly, in today’s digital world, online dating can come with hidden dangers. Romance scams are on the rise, targeting people looking for genuine connections and the consequences can be devastating.

Recently news outlets have covered the story of Donna Nelson, a Perth grandmother. Donna met a man online who spent two years charming her. He promised marriage, a future together, and a family life. But when she traveled overseas to meet him, she unknowingly became the victim of a drug smuggling operation. Donna is now serving six years in a Japanese prison, spending nearly all her time in solitary confinement - a tragic result of trusting a man she had never met in person.  Authorities are not actively searching for the masterminds behind the crime. Donna remains in jail, while her daughters try every avenue to free her.

Men are also targeted by love scams. Paul*, a retired police officer and single father from Melbourne, lost nearly $480,000 to a romance scam after falling for a woman he met online who encouraged him to invest in cryptocurrency. Despite never meeting in person, they messaged daily and built what he felt was a deep emotional bond. "Dianna" convinced Paul to transfer money out of his ING and Macquarie accounts and invest through a fake crypto platform. His banks did not flag any issues, despite Paul calling ING to check.  Paul’s story highlights how even experienced, intelligent people can be manipulated when trust and emotion are involved and why meeting face-to-face is critical before building financial or emotional commitments.

3 Tips to Avoid Romance Scams

1. Meet in Person Early
A scammer will usually find reasons to delay meeting - citing work trips, emergencies, or overseas commitments.  Always aim to meet early. If they’re serious, they’ll make the effort.

2. Never Send Money
No matter how convincing the story - medical emergencies, travel mishaps, financial troubles - a genuine person won’t ask you for money. The minute financial requests enter the conversation, it’s time to walk away.

3. Watch for Red Flags
Scammers often move very quickly in building emotional intimacy. They may declare love after only a few conversations. They may also avoid video calls or meetings. Trust your instincts - if it feels rushed, pressured, or inconsistent, it probably is.
